JK Rowling's boy wizard would have needed more than just the Philosopher's Stone in order to predict just how much of an impact his adventures would have on global culture. For a series of children's books to become so massively popular, spawning movies and all manner of merchandise, the chances are ridiculously small. Harry Potter did it though, with each of the seven novels becoming firm favourites the world over, and several of them being listed amongst the greats as some of the finest books ever written.
While that last claim is open to debate, there’s no denying that the Harry Potter story and characters have become so firmly ingrained in the modern psyche that it can be strange to think of a time before Muggles and MudBloods were common knowledge to millions of readers.
